Pediatrics/allergic asthma?

Question
My son is 11 years old and has been coughing, wheezing, and has a runny nose for nearly five weeks.  He was taken to the emergency room when all of this began and was told he had an URI and was prescribed an albuterol inhaler.  Since June he has been cough to the point where he struggles to stop and catch his breath and at some points vomits clear mucus.  He has been seen by an allergy doctor which he said his left lung sounded tight and he though he had allergic asthma.  He then was prescribed asmanex and nasacort.  He has been taken this medicine for a little over a week and continues to use the albuterol inhaler however he has little relief.  He often has coughing spells at night bad enough where he awakens everyone.  It does reside for a little bit after taking the albuterol inhaler.  After having the allergy scratch test two days ago it showed he had very little allergies.  The doctor went ahead and drew blood to have it tested since he was lactose intolerant when he was a baby.  He then gave me a brochure on LPR.  I am at my wits end because nothing is helping.  Am I able to give him benadryl with the other prescriptions he's taking?  We did try Claratin but it didn't touch his symptoms.  We are now waiting to hear back about the blood results but what can we do in the mean time to give him relief?

Answer
