Question QUESTION: Hello doctor, my daughter is 6 months and 1 week old. For the past 3 weeks, she has been having soft and long and frequent bowel movements. She was taking lactogen, raagi porridge, and multigrain porridge; all stopped after the advise of the doctor. Stool reducing substance and stool routine all were normal. Now, she is taking idli, rice and dhal, potato, carrot, khicdi, little curds, etc. There is no change. After feeding within half an hour she has a bowel movement and in a day she has 4 to 5 all are formed, soft, and long. It looks like transit is happening very fast. She has not gained weight and has not lost weight also. She was given zinc syrup and now taking saccharide in 20 mL water 2 times daily. I see no improvement. Baby is otherwise very active and has met all milestones. Please advise me as to what tests or change of diet I should do further. I am really scared as I have miscarried thrice before.. Thanks in advance.
ANSWER: sorry for late.
if they are formed stools and dont smell, no worry.
many times frequent dietary changes in mother and baby can alter stool of infants.
passing stools immediately after feeds is normal at this stage.
if the stools are bulky..., your doctor may complete a course of metronidazole syrup or notozoxanide considering the possibility of giardiasis.

QUESTION: Thanks doctor. Stools are formed but they are soft and has smell to it. No breastfeed is given. My only worry is as she passes stools immediately after feeding that means her body is not receiving any nutrients isnt it doctor. She has not put much weight this month just 100 grams in total. Stools are bulky too......Is there any test to confirm Giardiasis? I shall ask my peds about this during my next visit. Thanks
Answer well, all tests need not be positive all the time.
you may discuss with your doc regarding specific therapy.
add some probiotics like curds every day and chart his weight on growth charts to see where he falls.
