AboutDavid Olson, MD Expertise I would be happy to attempt to answer any questions about general pediatric topics, either medical issues or behavioral issues. This would include all the various questions one receives in a busy pediatric practice. I`m a board certified pediatrician in northern Michigan and have been in practice for over 15 years. I enjoy the teaching role I have in our practice and would enjoy the opportunity to help others with their pediatric problems.
Question my 5 year old daughter has been sick now for almost 3 weeks. at first she had very bad headaches along with vomiting, really bad stomach pain ooand low grade fever. after about 10 days vomiting she began to vomit coffee ground looking blood and then blood clots. we had been to 2 pediatricians, to a gi dr, and to the er 3 times for iv fluids when they decided to admit her into a childrens hospital. she has had alot of blood tests and cultures, urine and stool tests. 2 ct scans of her stomach and 1 on her head. they also did an upper endoscope. everyrhing has shown normal except her white blood count is ele ated and continues to rise and her sed rate is also elevated, at 50 now, which also continues to rise. she has been in the hospital for 4 days now and continues to vomit, only occasionaly with no more blood. and continues to run low fever, around 100-101, but only sparaticly. and sometimes she still has stomach pain. she also complains of her hips and lower back aching. she is very fatigued. thank you.
Answer Hi, amber,
Hard for me, a humble pediatrician in Northern Michigan, to find out what is going on when a pediatric hospital and multiple specialists haven't been able to determine the cause of her problems. With the elevated sed rate, we think along the lines of connective tissue diseases, like juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a puzzler when it presents with a more systemic presentation, rather than frank joint swelling. With the prolonged illness, the fever, the aches and pains, perhaps a bone marrow exam might be in order.
Hope this finds her better and I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance to you.
