AboutDavid Olson, MD Expertise I would be happy to attempt to answer any questions about general pediatric topics, either medical issues or behavioral issues. This would include all the various questions one receives in a busy pediatric practice. I`m a board certified pediatrician in northern Michigan and have been in practice for over 15 years. I enjoy the teaching role I have in our practice and would enjoy the opportunity to help others with their pediatric problems.
Question I just read and answer you gave to a parent whose child had blisters on their
tongue, but no other symptoms. My daughter has the same blisters... two
white blisters (one looks like it has a black dot in the middle), but she also
has a low grade fever and says that it really hurts to swallow. She is 4 years
old... Should I take her to an emergency room or wait until monday morning
to see our regular DR.
Answer Hi, Mama B,
This is almost certainly a viral illness, with the oral blisters on the tongue and the low fever and sore swallowing. There is no specific treatment for this. Your doctor will probably recommend Motrin or Tylenol for the pain and other TLC measures.
Unless she is getting dehydrated or increasingly sick, she probably doesn't need to be seen by anyone. Please don't do to the ER unless she seems really sick.
