Question My 5 month old is on Sulfatrim as a profolactive measure to prevent kidney infection. He has an enlarged urater on one side. My Ob/Gyn prescribed Nitrofurantoin for me to treat a UTI. I am breastfeeding and want to know if it is okay that he is receiving the antibiotic I am on through the milk, and also the Sulfatrim I give him orally. The pharmacist disagreed with my Ob/Gyn.
Answer I would not use Sulfatrim as a prophylactic antibiotic, because of the side effects associated with the sulfamethoxazole part of the drug. I would use just trimethoprim. Nitrofurantoin is also used as a propylactic antibiotic. I would have to defer to the pharmacist in relation to how much gets into the breast milk and if that is a problem.
