Pediatrics - Tamiflu for Flu

Expert: John Thai, M.D. - 9/16/2009

Question
Hi I read the CDC recommendations that anyone in a high-risk group be given tamiflu at the first signs of a flu-like illness.  I have a 4 month old and a 2 year old - should I insist on tamiflu if they come down with the flu?  Our ped. says he doesn't like tamiflu.

Just trying to get more information.

Answer
Hi Jessyca,

To be honest, I am not a "big fan" of Tamiflu as well. Tamiflu should only be prescribed should there be a positive test for influenza virus and the child has other underlying illnesses. Most pediatricians carry the rapid testing kits which would provide results within 15 minutes in their office. The drug has side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and could aggravate an asthmatic child. And usually, the flu will go away within a week.

Secondly, we do not recommend Tamiflu for any child under 1 year old. The problem is that the drug can reach the brain in toxic levels and may kill the child.

Should you observe your child to be ill or have flu-like symptoms, take him or her to your pediatrician. Should there is an urgent concern, take him or her to the emergency room or call 911.
