Pediatrics/6 year old wont take medicine

my 6 year old will not take medicine. he has many delays but also many strengths. Cognitively, he is great but has a speech delay (significant), social skills delay and has mild OCD.  He used to take medicine fine as a toddler but one day said no and tantrums and spits out meds. Any advice?

Hi, Sharina,

Most meds can be mixed with any food or liquid.  Give this a try.  If this doesn't work, then forcefully doing it repeatedly usually will persuade one to take this, if it is absolutely needed.  Also an approach of rewards (ie. bribes) can be helpful with some children.

Good luck, Dr. Olson

I would be happy to attempt to answer any questions about general pediatric topics, either medical issues or behavioral issues. This would include all the various questions one receives in a busy pediatric practice. I`m a board certified pediatrician in northern Michigan and have been in practice for over 15 years. I enjoy the teaching role I have in our practice and would enjoy the opportunity to help others with their pediatric problems.
