Pediatrics/Sleeping problem

Sir my 16 months old son gets up several time in night.he is weaned off at the age of 13 still he gets up lot and does not have a sound sleep.plz help me in having his sound sleep cycle.advice?

Hi Smriti,

I am so sorry for replying late; I was busy elsewhere.

Every child (and even adults) NORMALLY wake up several times (although briefly) during sleep. It is NOT due to hunger.

In babies/ toddlers,  we have to help them to get back to sleep. However, baby should not be fed to put him back to sleep.

To handle the situation, one must understand the concept of "last waking memory". Whatever the baby does just before the sleep becomes "last waking memory"...and this memory is very "strong". Whenever, baby wakes up at night, he recalls what happened just before sleep. Hence, if the baby goes off to sleep WHILE feeding and then wakes after 1-2 hours, her first thought would be "Where is the feed?" and would start crying and won't stop till she gets feed.

Hence, to manage the current situation, you need to focus on the last feed that is given to baby. There has to be a "gap" of at least 15-20 minutes between feeding and sleeping. In those 15-20 minutes, you can help him to sleep by patting him/ giving him a big soft toy to hold on. Now, if he wakes up (and he would), he can easily go back to sleep when you repeat the same (patting her/ giving her a big soft toy to hold on).

Practice it daily and you would get results in a few days hopefully.

Best wishes,

I would be happy to answer general queries on prevention and treatment of ailments in newborn, infant, toddler, child or an adolescent. Needless to say, it will not be possible to answer any query that requires diagnosing, since it is not possible to examine a child online.
