Dear Dr,
My wife is suffering from typhoid, what will be effect of this to my 16 month old baby? What precaution should be taken?  Breast feeding is safe or should be avoided?
Thanks & Regards,

Hi Neeraj,

Breastfeeding must be continued, as it gives protection against infections, including typhoid.

Typhoid fever is transmitted by food and water. Hence, one should be careful of food and personal hygiene. Everyone in the family should be vaccinated against typhoid. "Ususal" typhoid vaccine can be given to every family member above 2 years of age and should be repeated every 3 years for continued protection. Now, new (Conjugate) typhoid vaccine is also available that can be given to anyone above 9 months of age. 2nd dose of this vaccine is to be given 1 year after 1st dose. After 2 doses, it gives protection against typhoid fever for at least 10 years.

Best wishes,
