Pediatrics/pneumococcal vaccination

QUESTION: My son is 03 years old & he is vaccinated with pentaxim 03 times at 06 weeks,10 weeks & 14 weeks, also he is vaccinated with hepatitis A & B, MMR, OPV & Typhoid, but he was never vaccinated with "Pneumococcal", please advice thanks

ANSWER: Hi Priyanka,

Your son will benefit from pneumococcal vaccine even if he is vaccinated now. Normally, 4 doses of Pneumoccal vaccine are recommended, when it is given you young infants. However, since you child is 3 years old, he would require only 1 or 2 doses, depending upon brand. There are 2 brands that are available: "Prevenar 13" covers 13 types of Pneumococcal bacteria and if that vaccine is given, only one dose would be required. The other brand is "Synflorix" that covers 10 types of the Pneumococcal bacteria and  2 doses ( at 2 months interval) would be required, if this brand is chosen.

Please feel free to ask for any further clarification

QUESTION: Sir, I want to get my child vaccinated with single dosage "Prevenar 13" brand vaccine, further I request you to kindly inform me, whether this vaccine has any known side effects viz. fever pain etc.

Hi Priyanka,

Just like ANY vaccine, Prevenar 13 can cause some degree of fever, pain...but usually it is low grade and no medications are usually required to be given.

I would be happy to answer general queries on prevention and treatment of ailments in newborn, infant, toddler, child or an adolescent. Needless to say, it will not be possible to answer any query that requires diagnosing, since it is not possible to examine a child online.
