Question
My son is almost 2 and has been on Miralax for about a year now. He's built a dependance on it and I can't seem to find a dosage chart. Right now, he takes 2-3 capfuls (17g/cap) BID to be able to 'go'. Do you have any recommendations for Miralax dosage for children? Do you know who or where I could find that information?

Answer
Hi, Shauna,

This is a very high dose and I doubt he needs that much.  I would just gradually decrease the dose a 1/2 cap per week for a few months to see the dose he seems to do best on.  I think the amount you are using is not harmful, but a waste of good medicine.  A 20-30 pound kid would usually take a mix of 1/2 cap in 8oz fluid 2 or three oz per day of this concentration as a maintenance dose.  The official dose is .8g/kg/day or about 8 grams per day for a kid 20 #.  You can see you are well above that.

Good luck, Dr. Olson

I would be happy to attempt to answer any questions about general pediatric topics, either medical issues or behavioral issues. This would include all the various questions one receives in a busy pediatric practice. I`m a board certified pediatrician in northern Michigan and have been in practice for over 15 years. I enjoy the teaching role I have in our practice and would enjoy the opportunity to help others with their pediatric problems.
