Question
My daughter was born Feb.22 2005 so she's aprox 7 weeks old..I am breastfeding with an occasional bottle of formula (mabey 5 her entire life) thought you might need this info.. ok she was having normal bowl movements you know yellowish green seedy looking.. (normal for breast fed) and a few days after easter, I would say she stopped going poop. after 6 days she finealy went it was the consistancy of pudding and green. Now she didn't show any symptoms of cramping although she did eat a little less. she then pooped like that for 2 days and she is now going on day 3 of no pooping.. I have 2 other children and I never had this happen. I don't know if I should take her to a doctor or if its just simple constipation? I have tried researching this myself but I can only find things on diarehhia. please help

Answer
Breast fed babies usually have lots of bowel movements at first--usually after every feeding.  However, the first month or so, most of them will slow down and only have a few bowel movements.  Many breast fed babies will skip a day or two at a time, and some babies will skip several days.  I've seen many breast fed babies who have a bowel movement once a week.  As long as the stools are normal consistancy--not too hard or too watery--it is probably normal and there is no need for any treatment.  If she is having normal but infrequent bowel movements, wetting diapers well, growing normally and developing normally, relax and enjoy it.  She's fine.  If she is uncomfortable, or straining, or her bowel movements are hard, or she is not wetting several diapers a day, then she should see her doctor.
