Subject: Recommend amoxicillin dosage

Question
I went to a clinic for my 43lb 4 yr old daughter with 2 ear infections but the recommended dodsage for the amoxicillin seems high 2 1/4 teaspoon twice a day?

Answer
It depends on the strength of the Amoxicillin.  It comes in 4 concentrations:  125, 200, 250 and 400 mg per teaspoon.  The recommended dose was doubled a few years ago, due to resistant bacteria.  It is now 90mg per kilogram of body weight per day, divided into two doses.  For a 43 pound child, the total dose should be about 1800 mg.  That's 900mg twice a day.  If it's the 400mg/teaspoon concentration, 2 1/4 teaspoons is exactly 900mg.  Sounds like it's just the right dose.
