Pediatrics - Toddler Tummy Troubles

Expert: Dr Kondekar Santosh Venketraman Pediatrician MD from Mumbai India - 9/29/2006

Question
My 19mnth old son has had tummy problems since birth. He was breastfed for 6 weeks but then put on formula as he was always upset and had screaming attacks. Formula didnt make any difference. Was told when he was 3 mnths it was reflux but gaviscon and rhantidine only made things worse. When he started on solids things didnt get any better.  Now at 19mnths there are only a few things he can eat.  He CANNOT eat rice, corn, noodles, meat, biscuits, fruit, soy, raisins, carrots, peas, broccoli.  So far the only things we have found he is ok on, is Rolled Oats, potatoes, pumpkin, tiny amount of cheese, half small potttle of yoghurt, small amount of fries.  We have been to 2 paediatricians, gastrointeroligist, had an ultrasound scan done and yet they say there is nothing wrong with him since he is putting weight and doing all the things he should. This would be as we still have him on formula.  We cant take him in the car as he cries about 5 - 10 minutes into the trip.  He has no allergies as he doesnt break out in a rash.  He will wake up screaming during the night, be whingy and upset during the day if he has eaten any of the above and he also gets constipated a lot.  Could someone please shed some light on this as Im sure there must be some reason for it. Is it his digestive system or his bowels? Would be a lot easier to deal with if we knew what it was.

Answer
My 19mnth old son has had tummy problems since birth.
====== something surely needed evaluation. please speicfy what do u mean.. vomitting loose stools or constipation

He was breastfed for 6 weeks but then put on formula as he was always upset and had screaming attacks. Formula didnt make any difference.
===== formula isnt the solution, but may cause this problem.

Was told when he was 3 mnths it was reflux but gaviscon and rhantidine only made things worse.
====== reflux causes vomitting, not constipation.

====== try using the articles in soups!

 We have been to 2 paediatricians, gastrointeroligist, had an ultrasound scan done and yet they say there is nothing wrong with him since he is putting weight and doing all the things he should.
====== they told right!

======== constipation! sure is reason for most such problems... but you dint speicfy what else he gets!

common cause of constipation is high phosphate and proteins in formulas.
adding intermittent water sips between feeds and calcium supplements may solve the prob.
but in early phase you may use laxatives like glycerine suppository.
