Pediatrics - Weight gain in 13 month old

Expert: Mary Pat, R.N. - 9/15/2004

Question
Mary,

What is an average weight gain for a breastfed child who is one year old.  My daughter weighed 17lbs in June and now weighs 18lbs and 8 ounces.
Thank you.

Tanya

Answer
Dear Tanya:

18 lbs for a 13 month old is not a bad weight.  I could not give you an average but most 13 month old children fall between 18 lbs and 20 lbs.  If a child has small, petite parents they too are usually small so a lot depends on genes as well as calories.

I would make sure she is eating from all food groups and being served mashed table foods like you eat now.  At this age food becomes more important than milk.

If concerned I would discuss with her pediatrician but I think she is fine.

Sincerely,

Mary Pat
