Pediatrics - constipation in newborns

Expert: Mary Pat, R.N. - 3/23/2005

Question
my grandson is one week old today.is having trouble with constipation. we  have tried karo syrup in small dose's once a day is this ok or should we try new approach

Answer
Dear Lynette:

Depends on what you mean by "constipation".

If the baby is not having regular B.M.'s at least daily and skips a day or two it is only constipation if the stool is coming out like hard marbles.  If the stools are soft I would do nothing.

If all the baby's stools are hard the Karo syrup is the correct treatment.  You add the Karo to formula once a day.  If that does not work you can try 1/2 ounce of baby apple juice mixed with 1/2 ounce of warm water once a day.

I hope this works.

Sincerely,

Mary Pat
