Question Dr. Blount,
I'm confused as to how much dosage of infant motrin to give to my 12 month old. fever is 102 and she's 20lbs.? I gave 1.875ml,fever came down alittle, but 5 hours later it climbed back up to 102. Can i give a higher dosage?
Answer Since the effect wears off in about 4 hours I don't think you need a higher dose but perhaps a more frequent one. But I suggest that one doesn't need to do something just to get rid of fever. It is a part of the illness, it does the body no harm, and the illness doesn't go away any sooner because you get rid of the fever. In fact there are studies that show the these illnesses last a slightly shorter time when the fever is allowed to run its normal course (unless it gets over 104 or so, in which case the child feels so bad the medication will help to make him feel better). Just be sure the child is drinking extra liquids since fever increase the loss of fluid through the skin.
