Water intoxication can result if an infant is given water in addition to breastmilk or formula. Breastmilk and correctly made up formula are overwhelmingly made up of water anyway. The World Health Assembly advises no supplementary water (or any other foodstuff or liquid) be introduced until the baby is 6 months of age.
