Gael Tynefield, while working for abbot medical or something. U can google it. He happens to be the "actualy" inventor tho under contract with abbot received nothing but a bonus in his pay check. And yes it was originally invented for using with children.

I worked at Redmer Plastics in Boca Raton, Fl in the 1960's making butterfly needles that we were told were invented by Mr. Redmer. They were sold to Abbott Laboratories until Abbott bought out Mr. Redmer.

Other things we made that were Mr. Redmer's inventions were the pinch clamp and the blood filter, also now belonging to Abbott.

My Uncle, Albert Bujan of Abbott Labs was the inventor of the Butterfly needle.  He passed away December of 2014.  He also has 10 other patents while employed with Abbott Labs, of North Chicago, IL.  I am very proud of him.

However the work of A. Bujan added upon earlier work by A.S. Rathkey and others who had already proposed a needle with wings. The patent issued to A.S. Rathkey and separately to R.R. Holmes predates that of Abbott Labs by at least 3 years.
