Pediatrics - rubbing alcohol

Expert: Christina Bailey - 8/27/2006

Question
HI,
Is there anything wrong with putting rubbing alcohol on your HEAD to alleviate a swelling? I'm always afraid to put anything on my head as that is the most sensitive part of the body.

Answer
Hi jeff. Rubbing alcohol is good to use as an astringent to dry out pores, and it cleans minor cuts and scrapes too. Its not going to help with the swelling. Although it provides a "cooling" sensation when applied, it will not reduce swelling. I really need more specifics to continue with a proper answer for you. I need to know exactly WHERE this swelling is; How long has it been there; the size; was there a cause that you know of?
