Pediatrics - toilet training

Expert: Mary Pat, R.N. - 7/19/2004

Question
My 4 year old son refuses to wear pants. Insists on a nappy. All attempt to date to encourage praise etc have been met with resistance, crying, etc, he even puts his own nappy on if I ignore his pleas. When I praise it seems to have the opposite affect and he immediately takes the pants off. He will wee in the toilet occassionally.
Can you suggest a way forward.

Answer
Dear Gail:

Get rid of the nappies. Make certain you show your child you are getting rid of the nappies.  Have one last discussion about potty training and encourage the child to use the potty.  If he or she soils, involve him/her in cleanup.  By keeping the nappies around your child knows you can give in to his wishes.

Sincerely,

Mary Pat
