Question
QUESTION: ivan, how do i find buses from cuzco to ollantaytambo and on to aguas calientes?   can i get a taxi from cuzco to ollantaytambo for less $ than the expensive train.

ANSWER: Hello Marcus,
The cheapest is to take from Cusco a bus to Urubamba, there a no direct buses to Ollantaytambo from Cusco. From Urubamba (1 hour away from Cusco) you have to take a bus to Ollantaytambo. Once there you have to take the train, there are no buses to Aguas Calientes. The Backpacker-Cerrojo (Ollantaytambo-Aguas Calientes) is the cheapest train, but still expensive. Depending on the time of the day it is cheaper. Afternoon trains are cheaper than in the morning. More details on schedules and prices at:

QUESTION: Ivan,  thank you so much--this tells me how I can get there.  Do you have any bus companies that you recommend from cuzco to urabamba; and from urabamba to ollantaytambo?

Marcus

Answer
Hello Marcus,
There are many local buses, all are the same, so you just hop on the next one. There is a bus leaving every 10-15 minutes from the local bus station. Don't ask for the big bus terminal in Cusco, but for the local bus stop for Ollantaytambo.

Experience

I'm a tour guide in Peru and I know very well the main tourist destinations like Machu Picchu, the Inca trail, Cusco, lake Titicaca, the Nazca lines, etc. I love outdoors and I have hiked many times the Inca trail and the Colca canyon (the 2nd deepest canyon in the world). I also know the best places to go like restaurants, coffee shops, bars, pubs, and nightclubs in many cities of Peru.
