Pest Control/Big, slow black flies

I live in the Northeast, and found the big black flies in the house in shortly after Christmas.  Friend tells me they were in larvae stage on the Christmas tree I brought into the house, and hatched because they warmed up.  Tossed the tree, and they stopped showing up.
