Pest Control - Squirrel Eating Wires of Car

Expert: Matthew Grady - 3/5/2009

Question
I have 3 cars 2 Cadilacs and 1 Lincoln.  Twice I had squirrels chew the wires in my Cadilacs not the Lincoln. I was told to get Ro Pel it didnt work.  I hired a professional wildlife removal co. It didn't stop them.  Please help this is costing a fortune. There has to be something. Also why I had these cars for 4 years parked in the same driveway. What would make them do this and what can I do to make them stop?  Thanks alot.

This is an odd situation. I've had people call me before with mice building nests inside automobiles but never squirrel damage.
There isn't much that can be done to prevent them from entering the undercarriage of the vehicles. I am not and have never been a fan of repellents. It is my opinion that the only permanent way to solve an animal problem is to restrict access (exclude) to the affected area. Would there be any way to install some type of skirting around the bottom of each vehicle? Almost like a knee-high plastic fence (almost like a baby gate?)that could be put in place and removed very easily?
I would look into that and then implement a trapping program in an effort to trap and remove as many squirrels as possible from your yard. Keep the traps set in the yard and around the vehicles all the time and monitor them. If you use fresh bait you should be able to trap the squirrels before they get to your vehicles.
Try to figure out exactly what the squirrels find so attractive about these vehicles. Are they looking for shelter.
As I mentioned I would advise against any type of repellents as they are a waste of time and money.

Good Luck and I hope that helps.
