Pet Rats/Rat with open wound smelly wound and swollen penis

Question
QUESTION: My rat Romeo has this open wound I'm very concerned about.
I noticed it last night and this morning it is much worse even though I cleaned it and put antibiotic ointment on it last night.
I plan to take him to the vet monday but for now I was wondering if you could help me.

He has a round open wound directly above his penis, his penis is swollen and because I noticed it smelled this morning I expected puss so squeezed it lightly and puss came out of his sheath.
He is so swollen I fear he cant urinate. I cleaned the wound and gave him some steroids my vet gave me for my rats if they have issues breathing to try and help with the swelling.

Romeo is neutered, he had a hernia that was also repaired internally at the same time. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with this. My vet left the stitches for the hernia in and I was told they would never be removed. The surgery was over three months ago.

I guess I just dont know what else to do he feels hot to the touch and I'm concerned he might have a fever.
Do you have any advice for me or know of anything else I can do?

Thank you,
Rebecca

ANSWER: Dear Rebecca,

*Is there any way at all he could get to an emergency vet???

*Is there any way you could join a Facebook rat medical group of friends of mine so they can ask you questions?

They will be expecting you. You will also see your post.

He is undoubtedly in pretty severe pain. The problem is the steroids. They interfere with NSAID pain meds.

I am going to send you this hoping you get it immediately and see if we can get some help.

I would also like to know what steroids and how much

Please tune into the site above or write me back asap.

QUESTION: I dont have a facebook account. :(
We dont have any emergency vets within 2 hours of us and I dont drive so my parents would have to take me and they're not willing to.

He seems to have been getting better though and the swelling has gone down and he looks like he is healing.
He is also still eating and drinking and his eyes are still bright, his fever seems to be gone aswell.
He smelled like urine when I was cleaning him so I assume he can urinate.
The steroids are prednisone and I've been giving him 0.15 mls
I can get a picture of his wound if it would help?

Answer
Hi,

I was so relieved to read this this  morning. I am sorry I did not get to it but I knew the emergency was over and the vet will be able to take care of you. I was very upset last night that I hadn't seen the post earlier and then was waiting for you to see it and worrying. So I am very relieved.

Best of luck and the vet. If he has a friend they should go together to make it less stressful.

squeaks,

Natasha
