Pharmaceuticals - Brand Name Synthroid vs. Generic

Expert: Michael Anisfeld - 9/22/2008

Question
My doctor, who I respect, and his entire endocrinology practice at a major Baltimore hospital, prescribe Synthroid for low thyroid, rather than the generic. I have been taking Synthroid for 6 weeks now with favorable results. The problem is, my insurance company (military insurance) wants to see scientic studies that favor Synthroid over the generic before they will pay for my medication. How can I get these medical studies? Thank you.

Answer
As the FDA has approved generic Synthroid as bio-equivalent to the original brand, you will have a very hard time (if not an impossible time) either finding such papers, or convincing your insurance company to pay for the brand name.

The only thing that I can think of is that your physician marks the prescription "no substitution permitted", and when the insurance company refuses to pay, you get your physician to explain directly to the insurance company why generic substitution is unacceptable to you and to him.

Good Luck.
