Question Should a woman who is taking Nitrofur continue to breastfeed an infant who is two weeks old? What are the risks? should she stop while taking the medicine?
Answer Nitrofurantoin is excreted into human milk. It is considered compatible with breast-feeding by American Academy of Pediatrics, although there is a theoretical risk of hemolytic anemia in neonates and G-6-PD-deficient infants. Due to the potential for serious adverse effects in infants less than one month old, a decision should be made either to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
