Question I am currently taking 30mg amphetamine/dextroamphetamine (Adderall xr) for ADHD and have very high blood pressure (165/116). I am afraid that my doctors next step is going to be to put me on a benzodiapien for anxiety and stress to help lower that BP and reduce my headaches. I have taken 5mg of acetaminophen and hydrocodone (Lortab 5mg) for my headaches from a prescription for a severe case of "tennis elbow". I have noticed in my Blood pressure log, that when I am taking that 5mgacetaminophen and hydrocodone I am not as stressed or anxious and my BP is much lower (130/90). Is it possible to talk to mu doctor about a 5mg acetaminophen and hydrocodone for my anxiety and headaches since it help both anxiety, stress ans high blood pressure-and what are the risks of taking that with the amphetamine?
Answer Acetaminophen and hydrocodone is basically a pain reliever. Since your headache was relieved, it caused decrease in anxiety and subsequently decrease in blood pressure. But it cannot be used regularly as treatment of hypertension since the response is inadequate and shortlived and it causes a number of potentially serious side effects over long term use. For your condition, propranolol (or any other non-selective beta blocker) will be an appropriate drug since it reduces blood pressure, blocks the blood pressure increasing effects of amphetamine/dextroamphetamine and also relieves anxiety.
