Subject: Depomedrol for knee ( 27, male )

Question
Dear Dr.
I have been prescribed Depomedrol mp 40 mg #2 by my doctor. Is it 2 pills or injections ? It says with interval of 1 week. My knee doesn't have pain, do you think I need this ? I have  minor arthritis but does Depomedrol help recovery ?

Does Depomedrol have side effects ?

Thank you very much,

Tim

Answer
Dear Tim

This is an injection and is usually given directly into the joint (in your case the knee joint). It is not as bad as it sounds! I am surprised from what you say that this is really needed but I am a third party to this information and perhaps am not in a position to say whether you need this or not. Depo-Medrol given like this is very successful in relieving arthritic conditions and lasts for a long time but does not cure. These drugs, called corticosteroids have a vast range of adverse effects but with an occasional one-off injection such as this are very well tolerated with minimum, if any problems. I would not therefore be concerned about these effects. Also, as it is given directly to where it is needed these effects are again vastly curtailed.

Regards

Dr Alan Galbraith
