About Joe Haynes, R.Ph., MBA
Expertise
I can answer pharmacy/pharmacology questions as they relate to both pediatric and adult therapies. Please note that since I practice in Florida that I may not be able to answer specific questions regarding pharmacy practice in your state. As a disclaimer, I have no financial interest in recommending or failing to recommend any drug product. My goal is to give you the best answer to your questions regardless of product.

Experience
I have 24 years experience in pharmacy practice including pediatric and adult hospital, home-infusion, and long-term care (nursing home/ALF). I enjoy assisting with pediatric dosing and medication questions since children respond differently and are dosed differently than adults. I can help you determine if the dose you want to administer to your child is appropriate. I am currently director of pharmacy for a small community hospital in St. Petersburg, FL.

Question
Hello, I will be having oral surgery in a few days and need some advice on pain medications.  I am allergic to NSAIDs, aspirin, narcotics, barbiturates, etc.  I have no problems with Tylenol, but I find that it does little or nothing when it comes to severe pain.  Is there anything I can take -- OTC or prescription -- that will work better than Tylenol but won't give me an allergic reaction?  Thanks!

Answer
Adrian-
Not much left. There is Ultram (tramadol) or Ultracet (tramdol and Tylenol) which may work in your case.
You mention numerous allergies. Are these actual allergies where you broke out in a rash or had difficulty breathing or are they side effects where you felt nauseated and vomited? It is just unusual to have allergies to so many different chemical structures, I figured I would ask.
But right now, Ultram or Ultracet appear to be acceptable but you will need a script from the doctor.
