Pharmacology - Pomegranate & High Blood Pressure

Expert: Dr Alan Galbraith - 6/15/2009

Question
My husband takes Tritace 5mg and Lapitor 20mg everyday for blood pressure and cholesterol . At the same time he drinks two glasses of Pomegranate everyday . Could you please advise if this is ok and the amount of juice intake is correct . Also if its ok to have all three everyday . Thanks

Answer
Dear Kiran

There should be no problems with this but as pomegranate juice has only recently been readily available here and in most other countries interactions are still relatively unknown. I doubt if there will be any problem and the benefits of pomegranate juice, although still under investigation, seem very promising. I would reckon one glass should be enough though. I would allow him continue this regime and have his BP checked weekly at a pharmacy or home monitoring, Cholesterol checks need only be done according to his doctor's advice, usually yearly.

Regards

Alan Galbraith
