Expert: Dr Mohd Tariq Salman - 9/25/2009

Question
Hi Doctor

I was prescribed yesterday oxycodone by my doctor to deal with an strong vaginal pain related with the first outbreak of genital herpes, the pain was unbearable and I couldn't even sleep. My concern is that I have heard that this medication is highly addictive, and I am scare that using it for just a couple of days would make me addict, how long it takes for the person become addicted to this drug?

Answer
The use of Oxycodone under the guidance of physicians is generally safe and rarely causes problems. When taken with due care for short term periods (upto a few weeks), the drug is a very effective pain killer. Tolerance and physical dependence leading to addiction can occur only after several weeks to months of continuous use. Wishing you good health.
