Subject: Advil and Prevacid

Question
I stopped taking Prevacid two days ago due to the side effects that really bothered me. I have read that you shouldn't take Advil with Prevacid, but I called my local pharmacist this morning and asked if I could take an Advil- I have a really bad head cold and a very slight fever - now that I've stopped Prevacid for two days. She said that it would be fine; the two drugs do not interact, but they could possibly make a pre-ulcer condition worse (I have acid reflux, and I already knew about the Advil and ulcer issue). Do you agree?

Answer
There are no documented drug interactions between Prevacid and ibuprofen (Advil).  It is true that Advil can worsen acid reflux symptoms and can cause gastrointestinal bleeding in some patients with severe stomach problems.  It can also worsen pre-ulcer conditions.  It may be best for you take acetaminophen for pain or fever as long as you are not allergic to it.

Thanks
