Question
Every since I got married and started living with my husband I have seem to catch a lot of colds; I have gotten about 5 for so since September 2007.  My husband is a nurse but doesn't seem to catch colds as much as me.  Could it be possibly that he is passing on germs from the hospital to me?  Is there anything I can do to boost my immune system to prevent getting sick?

Thanks for your time!

Answer
I doubt that your husband is passing germs from the hospital to you.  Most germs from hospitals would not cause a common cold.  Your husband probably does have more resistance because he has been expose to more pathogens than you have since he works in a hospital.  As far as cold prevention the first step is hand washing and basic sanitation.  Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching your mouth, nose, or face.  Dispose of used tissues immediately.  Keep bathroom and kitchen surfaces clean and disinfected.  Also, don't share eating or drinking utensils.

There is some limited evidence to suggest taking vitamin C and/or echinacea.  Nothing has been proven at this point, but it isn't harmful, either.

Thanks
