Subject: lexapro dosage and timing

Question
Mr. Brandt,
I was prescribed 10 mg. of lexapro in April 07. After discussing it with my PCP, I have been switched to 5mg/day. The lack of sexual interest is really hurting my marriage to a very patient and supportive man. Is 5mg. really going to help? I am 37 years old woman. I hope to totally taper off during this year and hope that this dosage works. It has really helped me to cope with my depression. why is weight gain associated wiht SSRI

Answer
Hi Joyce,
The mechanism of weight gain with this medication is an unknown. It is not predictable if the 5 mg dose will be effective. It is a matter of trial and error. I always recommend the lowest effective dose. Try it and hopefully it works. The decrease in sexual interest is a problem with most antidepressants. Not everyone suffers from this adverse effect but it is common. Hopefully you can taper off and things will resolve.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt,B.Sc. Pharm
