About Nigel Simmons
Expertise
I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised. Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner. I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question. Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Pharmacy - aropax and ativan

Expert: Nigel Simmons - 12/5/2008

Question
hey there,,,,i have been taking aropax for a month now and i  am still getting anxiety.....a doctor prescribed me ativan and i wonder if it is alright to take ativan whilst im on aropax???

Answer
James

It is not uncommon to be prescribed an antidepressant / anti-anxiety drug such as paroxetine and a short acting benzodiazepine such as Ativan.

I would however advise caution in using the Ativan for too long, as it will only make withdrawal difficult further down the road. The full effects of paroxetine can take six to eight weeks to be achieved, so short term use of Ativan will help for this period, but should not be needed beyond that.

I hope this helps.
