Question “which class of antidepressants is the absolute best
Answer Hi John,
The SSRI's are currently the most prescribed antidepressants. They have a better safety profile than the tricyclics. To say that they are the best is difficult because they may not work for everyone. Some people still do better on the older antidepressants and some people are still on MAOI's such as parnate. But if you consider the side effect profile, safety, and drug interaction profile then the SSRI's are by far the best choice to start. There are new emerging classes but until we have more experience with them they will remain secondary to the SSRI's.
