Question
Thank you in advance for your time.  I am a 43 year old male and I have been on several antidepressent medications for about 5 years. My symptoms have been mild depression and concentration issues.  Recently, I had my son tested for ADD and realized I have had his problems for quite some time....long time.  I am on Lexapro 20mg once daily.  It seems to not be working as well.  I talked with my Dr and he recommended me trying a medication used for ADD patients.  He prescribed Stratera 80mg.  I took this for about a week and it helped allot on my concentration and energy, however, it apparently enlarged my prostate and made it almost impossible to urinate.  I am really frusterated and would like to take a little meds as possible..  Any suggestions, please  Thanks again

Answer
Dear Chris

The only other drugs that are used for ADD are the stimulants such as dexamphetamine or methylphenidate (Ritalin). Unfortunately they are not very good in depressive states as they can worsen depression. I agree you'll have to cease the Strattera. I would suggest a change in antidepressant as being the best alternative but you will obviously have to discuss this with your prescriber. One of the more stimulant type of antidepressants such as moclobemide may be best.

Sorry I am not off much help.

Regards

Dr Alan Galbraith
