Subject: Lovenox

Question
I was taught that when giving Lovenox the air bubble is not expelled and is injected before the medication and that the bubble acts as a safety feature ensuring that none of the medication will be lost and the air also helps distrube the medication. I belong to a BB for RN's and everyone thinks I'm crazy. I'm 52 y/o and they are mostly in their 20's, they are all saying the air bubble goes in last to push all the medication in and to reduce bruising. Please help settle this. All of the available info online says do not eject the air bubble but doesn't specify if the air goes in before or after the medication. Do you know? Do you have a link to the specific information? Thank you so much for your time. Joanna Hysler, RN

Answer
 Hi,Joanna!
The manufacturer directions say: to avoid loss of drug from the 30mg and 40mg syringe, DO NOT expell the air bubble from the syringe prior to injection. So tell those young whippersnappers they are wrong and to listen to the voice of experience!! LOL. For the non-believers, if they want to see it in print, it's on page 585 of the 2007-2008 Drug Information Handbook
Hope this helps, Mary
