Question
I work in a pharmacy in Minnesota. What I need to know is if a costumer brings in a prescription for 20mg of a drug taking it bid and they want 40mg and to take it 1qd. can the pharmacist change the prescription for them. Or should they get a new one.

Answer
The answer to that question depends on state law and the allowance that state law gives for professional judgement.  The safest course of action in most states is to call the doctor and discuss the change with the doctor before making it.  Minnesota law may allow the situation you describe.  Some states mandate the lowest cost alternative that is safe and equivalent (eg. New York).  Every state has little quirks in their state laws which make them unique.  Since I do not practice in Minnesota I am not familiar with all of their specific laws.

Thanks
