About Nigel Simmons
Expertise
I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised. Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner. I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question. Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Experience
Registered as a UK pharmacist in 1982 and have worked in a number of hospital and health management posts around the UK. Formerly Chief Pharmacist for a 440 bed general hospital in Cambridgeshire.

Subject: laxatives affect narcotic drug test??

Question
Hello, I just wanted to know if taking sennoside SUP 25mg of laxatives will affect a drug test i have tomorrow?  I believbe they're checking for narcotic activity & just want to see if this will be issue?? THanks so much for your time!

Answer
Hillary

Sennosides will themselves should not cause a false positive result. However, if you are looking to use them to promote elimination of a narcotic, you will probably find this does not work. Opiates have a very unique chemical structure and are detectable in blood or urine in very small amounts, so any recent consumption will almost certainly be detected.

If you have had an opiate prescribed by a doctor, then I would get a copy of the prescription or a letter from the doctor to show that the use is under supervision. It is far better to have this information before a test than trying to explain a positive result afterwards.

I hope this helps.
