Subject: pain killers and pregnancy
Question I am 17wks pregnant and have been taking Tramadol w/ tylenol. I believe it is also called Ultram or Ultracet. I only take 1 pill a day. I am trying to completely stop. I take them for lower back pain. I know it is a class C pain killer. I am woried I have caused harm to my unborn child. How bad is Tramadol while pregnant, and what kind of harm could I have caused the baby? Is there anything I can do to help my baby?
Answer Dear Elizabeth,
First, congratulations on your pregnancy! Secondly, I would not worry about any problems from taking one ultram a day. Most drugs are considered to be class C drugs and the safest time to take any medications is actually during your second trimester.
Of course, the less you take while pregnant, the better but if you are truly in a lot of pain and plain tylenol is not helping then ultram may be the way to go. Just use it sparingly and under a doctors supervision.
I wish you the best with everything. Take care and good luck!!
Warmly,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
