Subject: pregnancy and pain meds
Question I am 34 weeks pregnant with my 6th child.I began to feel ill after the birth of my 5th child in 2004.I have chronic headaches and R.A.Before this pregnancy I was on Effexor(225 mg) lamictal(200mg 2x daily) lorcet(2x daily) Sulindac(2xdaily)When I became pregnant I quit everything. At 5 months my OB-GYN sent me back to my neurologist who started me back on lamictal and lorcet.I started out on the lorcet at 4 daily and am now down to 2 daily.Although I have ben told this is fine and should not cause fetal addiction, all I do is worry.I wake up worried,go to bed worried.I have never taken meds when pregnant before this pregnancy. Can you give me your advice.Thank you for your time.Rachel
Answer Hi Rachel,
Lorcet contains the opioid hydrocodone. These drugs have not been adequately studied in pregnanacy but there is a chance for the newborn to become dependent if the mother has taken the drug regularly prior to delivery. It is best to try to avoid it.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
