About Nigel Simmons
Expertise I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised.
Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner.
I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question.
Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?
Experience Registered as a UK pharmacist in 1982 and have worked in a number of hospital and health management posts around the UK. Formerly Chief Pharmacist for a 440 bed general hospital in Cambridgeshire.
Past/Present clients Previously Sysop on CompuServe UK Professionals forum.

Subject: can I use this
Question Hi
One of the my friends suggested me to take Spirulina. I bought Spirulina tabs from market. In that they used Sodium alginate as binding agent. If I take that is it safe to me? Or any sideeffcets?
Answer Saroja
You do not say why you feel it is necessary to use such a product. From what I can determine, it offers no particular benefits over a healthy normal diet with multivitamin supplements if absolutely necessary. A recommendation from a friend who is presumably not medically qualified, is of limited value beyond anecdote.
Sodium alginate is commonly used in pharmaceutical products as a binding agent to help form the tablet from its component powders. It also has the advantage (for the sellers) that they can claim it is "natural" because alginates are commonly derrived from seaweeds.
I do not know the product, so cannot give any form of endorsement, but providing there is no medical history or regular use of other medications, then I would not forsee any problems. Ultimately though it is your decision and risk.
I hope this helps.
