Subject: Decilone Forte

Question
Hello Sir, I am from Philippines. Is Decilone Forte a steroid? I have herpes and varicella right now. Is it safe for me to take it? I already took 3 tablets. But when I texted my gyne, she said it is not safe and bad combination. I am confused now. Please give me a simple explanation. Thank you very much. I will really appreciate it.

Answer
Dear Melojane

Decilone is a corticosteroid ie it mimics some of the hormones from the adrenal cortex gland, similar but more potent than hydrocortisone. These drugs tend to slow down the immune system and are normally contraindicated in viral infections such as herpes and varicella. Thus I agree with your gynaecologist. You should be using a drug such as acyclovir (called Zovirax in Australia). The three tablets already taken should not prove harmful as it is a drug that ids slow to act.

Regards

Dr Alan Galbraith
