Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Subject: Microgynon 30
Question Hi i'm 16 and I've been on the combined pill for a week now I've only just started. When is it safe for me 2 stop using condoms??? please help ive asked everyone!!!! no one knows!!! x
Answer Chloe
Assuming you started taking the tablets at the correct point in your cycle, then the contraceptive effect should begin with the first dose. As a combination contraceptive, Microgynon acts by preventing ovulation (by making your body think you are already pregnant), so starting during your period prevents the build up of hormones which normally lead to ovulation.
In theory therefore, you could stop using condoms now, but if you are unsure of dates, then waiting until one course has been completed would be advisible.
Obviously whilst Microgynon is one of the most effective methods of contraceptives, it is never 100% effective and continued use of a condom would give added protection, so ultimately it is your decision whether you want that small added benefit. Remember also that while Microgynon is effective contraception, condoms can also prevent transmission of sexually transmitted diseases such as chalmydia, syphilis or gonnorhoea.
Ultimately, the decisions and risks are yours to take. What I would recommend is that you make these decisions for yourself, and do not allow yourself to be pressured by a partner to stop using a condom because he doesn't like it. A considerate and understanding partner will support your views and respect you for the decision. You are very young, and potentially may have several partners over time before you settle in a long-lived relationship. It is therefore important that you consider your physical and sexual health before the wishes of others.
I hope this helps.
