Question I am currently taking Nexium 2 x's a day. None of the PPI's seem to work. How long do the effects of the meds stay in your system and could they give me a burning tongue and mouth or is that the reflux. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Answer Hi,Jill!
I have not heard of any of the PPI's causing a burning tongue. It can cause dry mouth, though Sometimes a deficiency in B vitamins can cause a burning tongue that is red and cracked-looking.
Nexium should be taken on an empty stomach because food can cause it not to be absorbed, then it will not work as well. Certain anti-seizure meds such as carbamazepine and phenytoin will decrease its effectiveness also
If you are taking it on an empty stomach and have given it at least a week's trial, and it is not working, you should contact your doctor to see what he/she thinks. Hope this helps, Mary
