Subject: Prozac half-life

Question
Hi- I get panic attacks 2-3 times/month immediately before my period.  My doctor started me on Prozac 10mg QD.  I took for 1 week and cannot deal with the fatigue.  I am a nurse- I understand that it has to build in your system to work- I decided to try to deal with the panic attacks non- medically since they are infrequent.  I called my doctor and pharmacist and they said with the low dose and only taking for one week I could just stop considering the drug's half-life.  I stopped 2 days ago and am still soooo tired.  What I want to know is- with this dose and the duration I took it- how long before it is out of my system?  I keep reading anywhere from 4 days to 28.  Any info would be helpful- Thanks

Answer
Hi Kristin,
That is correct. It can take up to one month for the drug to completely eliminated from the body. The active metabolite of Prozac has an even longer half life than the parent drug.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
