Subject: darvocet and methadone relation

Question
QUESTION: I know that darvocet is structurally related to methadone, and has a metabolite that is alike or similar to methadone.I need to know if Darvocet can possibly show up as Methadone on a drug test?

ANSWER: Hi Heather,
Darvocet contain propoxyphene, whcih though chemically related is not the same as methadone. Some tests include propoxyhene while others do not. In a good quality test these drugs will not be confused for each other. If the test is bad or done badly no one can tell.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: My 89 year old mother-in-law was given a random drug test while at a regular doctor visit. At the time she was taking Propoxy-napap.They told her that her test showed that she was taking methadone. She does not take Methadone. She doesn't even know what Methadone is!They banned her from the whole doctor's office and now refuse to see her.She has worried herself to death trying to figure out what to do.I'm very upset at this doctor because, they would not repeat her test.I am trying to get to the bottom of it all .She also takes: Vitorin,Levothyroxine,Lisinopril,Nefediac, and Xanax, and the propoxy-napap that I mentioned earlier on.Everthing was fine with her and her doctor until this happened.I don't understand why they are treating her this way.I have heard that this doctor recently got into trouble for something to do with prescribing someone else some medicine. Can you please tell me if any of this other medicine may have ingredient of methadone or possibly show methadone on a drug test?I have had a pharmacist tell me that darvocet can show as methadone. That is why I needed a second opinion.

Answer
HI Heather
Thanks for the clarification. I think yo should lodge a strong protest with the doctor and the test company. If the company reports methadone after use of darvocet, the company is obviously making substandard kits.
In any case if the doctor is not redy to believe the patient but trusts some test results more, I think you should change your doctor. If you are very sure that the concerned patient has never taken methadone, you could go to a lawyer and sue the test company for a million dollars, that should bring some sense in the company.
