Question
Hello - My husband and I are currently trying to concieve our second child.  On Monday we had our 6th IUI procedure.  I have been taking Serophene (Clomid) as well as having an HCG shot 36 hours prior to each procedure.  My question is:  is it safe for me to take Mefenamic Acid?  Or can it interfere with the conception process in any way?  Due to the stimulation of my ovaries, I begin experiencing increasing pain and pressure after about a week into my monthly cycle, and this pain increases and continues as my cycle progresses.  I take Mefenamic acid for relief of menstrual pain and was wondering if it would be safe to take at other times of my cycle.

Thank you!

Answer
I would not recommend taking Mefenamic acid while trying to conceive except during your menstrual cycle.  It is extremely rare, but some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's) can cause the heart not to form properly in the fetus.  While mefenamic acid isn't the most likely culprit of all the NSAID's available if I was making the decision for my own pregnancy I would not take the risk.  I would talk to your doctor about what they would recommend for pain if acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not enough to relieve the pain.

Thanks

Barb Judge
